Scrapbooks, 1880-1923, kept by Rev. Richard Davis Smart and his wife, Mrs. Ella Aiken Smart, with clippings re social events in the pastorates served; items of a religious or inspirational nature, including several doctrinal issues within the Methodist Church, South; and news of family activities; articles collected by Mrs. Smart document writings and political career of her father, David Wyatt Aiken, Civil War veteran and member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and her brother, Wyatt Aiken, also a member of the U.S. House. Scrapbook, 1884-1890 [blue and gold cover] kept by Rev. R.D. Smart, includes table of contents; topics represented include temperance, prohibition and "the liquor question"; obituaries; news on Methodist conferences in S.C. and elsewhere; topical issues, such as "The Perils of our age" (p. 5), "Evils of Divorce" and "polygamy and the Mormon question" (p. 36); several entries re Wofford College, including a commencement address, and the laying of the corner stone for Alumni Hall; Methodist theology; "How to promote revivals"; and concern over perceived rising tide of atheism "sweeping over the continent" (p.18). Scrapbook, 1883-[ca. 1900?] [maroon binding], inscribed "Mrs. R.D. Smart, Newberry, S.C., Mar. 12th, 1883" on lining papers; clipping of a a long, undated essay published during Smart's minstry in Greenwood, S.C., re "The Holiness Association," in which Rev. Smart expresses disapproval of the movement and regret, "I find my judgement at variance with that of brethren tried and true.. (p. 23); clippings re political career and Civil War service of David Wyatt Aiken, his attendance at a Gettysburg reunion, June 1882 (p.11), a speech re education for women delivered at the Female Seminary at Anderson, S.C. (p. 12-13), a letter from a Civil War veteran with whom Aiken served, along with obituraries following his passing, including an 1887 printed notice honoring his memory from the National Grange (p.66); essay, 7 July 1891, re Columbia Female College in which Rev. Smart discusses his thoughts on the institution during his time on the campus (p. 49); clippings re meetings of the National Grange, ca. 1885; published account of flooding prior to the 1876 marriage of E. Aiken and R.D. Smart in Cokesbury, S.C., that delayed the minister's arrival, annoted by Mrs. Smart, "written by Mr. Kershaw who married us on June 20th 1876" (p.45); account of Rice family tour of N.C. mountains by S.M. Rice of Union, S.C., during his work in the Western North Carolina Railroad; and moral essays directed at men, women, and children, with advice on personal conduct, such as "The Preacher's Wife on the Rug" (p.2). Second scrapbook, ca. 1887-1923 [blue binding], compiled by Mrs. E.A. Smart, with clippings re published essays and news of her husband, Rev. R.D. Smart: his impressions of New England [ca. 1903?], "He Found Good Feeling for the South" (p.7), and obituraries of family and friends; clippings (pp. 11-12, 17-18) re construction of Panama Canal, Lieut Col. David DuBose Gaillard's career and his death, 1913, following seven years in Panama as an engineer; marriages and early deaths of Smart's sons: Henry G. Smart, of Boydton, Va., and Thelma Kahilu Parker Smart, "Hawaiian heiress," whom Smart married on the Parker family ranch on island of Hawaii (pp. 19-21); wedding at Nagasaki, Japan, of Richard Davis Smart, Jr. (b.1879), a missionary in China, and Mabel Winter Davison (pp. 27-29); clipping re "The Old Chapel... of Greenwood [S.C.]," historical sketch by C.M. Calhoun (p.38); Civil War anecdote published as poem re incident, 18 May 1864, involving Civil War soldier, John H. Nicholls of Spartanburg, S.C., while at Spottsylvania Court House (p.41); clippings re political career of Wyatt Aiken and his sudden death in 1923 (pp. 47-49); and clipping, "Nicknames of the People," compiled by a writer for the New York Sun for states of the U.S., most of which did not correspond to state nicknames: such as "Yellowhammers" for natives of Alabama, "Gold Diggers" for California, "Crackers" or "Buzzards" for Georgia; "Weasels" for South Carolina, etc.
